John O'Sullivan, Curator of Field Operations at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, inspects a pop-up satellite tag that can be fitted on a shark to measure and record temperature, depth and light levels as the animals travel, and therefore know more about shark behavior. Because these device self-release after a certain time, pop up to the surface and send data to the researchers via satellite, the animals do not need to be recaptured.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium put a female Great White Shark on exhibit in a million-gallon aquarium on September 14, 2004, three weeks after she was inadvertently caught in a commercial fishing net off Huntington Beach in Southern California. There are no other Great White Sharks on display in the world today, and no aquarium has ever exhibited a White Shark for more than 16 days.
